People have been living in Cambridge for over 2000 years. The first settlement of real significance was that of the Romans in AD 43 who recognised the strategic significance of the river crossing close to where Magdalene Bridge now stands.

The first bridge was built in the 8th Century under the Anglo Saxons then came the Vikings (Danes) who established a thriving river trade in the town.

KING'S COLLEGE

History of the College and Chapel

The College is a centre of education where students and staff live and work throughout the year.

The young King Henry VI laid the foundation stone of The King's College of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas in Cambridge on Passion Sunday, 1441. king's was one of his two royal and religious foundations, the other being Eton College.

The lay-out and adornment of the Chapel

The Chapel is 88 metres long and 12 metres in span between the piers and the vault is 24 metres high.

The Chapel is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

The Fleur de lys was the French royal emblem. Henry VII maintained the official claim of English Kings to the French crown.
